St. Mary's Children enjoy artistic expression of Native American History Lesson

What a wonderful opportunity it was for me to provide an assembly program on Native American History and Culture for the children at Queen of the World Elementary School in St Mary's, PA last month.  Over 140 third, fourth, and fifth graders were excited to watch the DVD on Native American History, engage in a discussion on their contribution to our nation, look at the crafts and jewelry we had on display, and color pictures of symbols and traditional patterns.

As an art teacher and minister, I am particularly interested in creating opportunities for learning through the arts and cultural exchange.  I really try to bring out the beauty and contributions that different cultures make to our world.  The children in the assembly were very interested in talking about Native Americans who had made significant contributions to our nation.  They learned about Kateri Tekakwitha, Lily of the Mohawks, the first Native American to be beatified by the Catholic Church.  This was particularly interesting to these children because of their own faith and location along upstate PA and along Lake Erie where the Mohawks, Seneca, and Iroquois nations lived.

It was fun to talk about Jay Silverheels (Tonto, the Lone Ranger's faithful sidekick), who was born on the Six Nations Reservation in Ontario, Canada.  We also talked about the famous Code Talkers from the Navajo Nation who served in all six Marine Corps combat divisions, as well as the U.S. Marine Raiders, and in every campaign in the South Pacific during World War 11.  The Code Talkers created a complex language or code, a system of signals, symbols, letters, and words used to send secret messages.  It made all the difference in our success during this war.  Native Americans have and still make many contributions to our nation.

Power in Art
There really is power in art!  It is a creative outlet that everyone was designed to use and we want to draw attention regularly to specific groups whose efforts are making a difference in their communities.  We are featuring two programs that are encouraging children and youth in a powerful way, YOUNG REMBRANDTS, drawing classes offered after school all over the nation, and INSPIRING COMPOSERS, creative music composition classes in community centers in Philadelphia.  These two programs were founded by visionary leaders who have a passion for the power of art and are finding ways to connect to children and youth in their communities.  You can contact them directly for more information on their programs and you can read more in my blog about the Power of Art: www.myspace.com/carolmaher
